New Year New Design Trends

New Year New Design Trends

Whenever a year ends, it’s always exciting to spend time thinking about resolutions and goals for the coming year. If you’re like us, you start thinking about new interior design trends and how you can work them into your home. Out with the old, in with the new… but it’s not always so easy. Lucky for you, we spent some time researching what will be the hottest new design trends for 2018 so you can spend less time dreaming, and more time doing! Check out our favourites below and let us know which is your favourite!

Best colours of 2018

Ultraviolet is Pantone’s colour of the year and they describe it as a colour that “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future" (Pantone, 2018). Sounds like the perfect colour to use to showcase your own design originality – think throw rugs, pillows, and other accenting features.

2017 was all about neutrals, and 2018 continues this trend but is a little bolder in taste, with terracotta. Terracotta is a little bronze/brown and makes for a lovely colour on accent walls and furniture (Morris, 2018)!

Monochrome – but BOLD

Neutral monochrome colours were super in for 2017 and the trend is here to stay – except in addition to whites and greys, think different shades of purples, greens, and terracotta. This might seem overwhelming…how much is TOO much colour? But done tastefully, this is a super fun and interesting way to incorporate more colour into your home. This picture incorporates TWO of our favourites: monochrome and terracotta.

Materials with purpose

We are living in an increasingly environmentally conscious society so it makes sense that interior design would follow in these socially conscious footsteps. Purposeful materials include recycled plastics turned into furniture, recycled smartphone screens, and interior tiles made from corn (Morris, 2018). If you’re looking for ways to make your home design more environmentally friendly, this year will definitely see a boom in these types of products!

Using natural surroundings in your design

We are so lucky to live in a place where nature is all around us, so it only makes sense to use some of this natural beauty to our advantage for home design (Acciado, 2018). Floor to ceiling retractable windows that display the mountains and other amazing views are a great way to appreciate the beauty that surrounds your house. Live in a condo or in the suburbs? Seek out local artisans who use materials from your area to create unique pieces for your home and local photographers who take beautiful photos that highlight how awesome where you live is!

Entertainment havens

This one will be popular with all the homebodies out there, and may even inspire those who aren’t to stay in! Perfect for entertaining your friends, media and games rooms are becoming more popular. Open concept media rooms are replacing strict movie rooms because they inspire games nights and quality time (Acciado, 2018).  Perfect way to pass winter nights mingling with family and friends!
